Renovation of the Luttre Station: Uni-Rail Teams Up with Deschacht to Tackle a Complex Railroad Project

Since 2023, a major modernization program for the railway infrastructure has been underway at the Luttre station, led by Infrabel. For the renovation of the platforms, Uni-Rail relied on Deschacht’s expertise and solutions to ensure safety, accessibility, and efficient water management, all while keeping train operations running.

A railroad project carried out without interrupting train service

For Uni-Rail, a specialist in railway construction, the biggest challenge was to renovate the platforms in phases while keeping one track permanently accessible to passengers. In addition to this operational constraint, there was also a technical challenge: ensuring efficient water drainage on nearly horizontal platforms while maintaining optimal accessibility for people with limited mobility.

A drainage solution tailored to the site's requirements

To meet these challenges, Uni-Rail chose Deschacht’s solutions: Hauraton Faserfix® Standard 100E linear drains, concrete inspection chambers, cast-iron frames, pull pipes, geotextile, and PVC pipes.

The decision to use linear drains proved to be a suitable alternative to traditional drainage channels. Thanks to their integration, the entire platform remains level across its full width, while water is efficiently drained through a network of sand traps and inspection chambers. The current phase of the project, which covers platforms 2 and 3, involves the delivery of 440 meters of Faserfix® Standard 100E linear gutters and 67 sand traps. This second phase follows the first phase, which was carried out in 2023 and for which Deschacht had already supplied similar quantities. Satisfied with the solutions implemented and the quality of service, Uni-Rail has once again placed its trust in Deschacht for this new phase of the project.

One partner for a wide range of materials

In addition to the good value for money, Uni-Rail particularly appreciated the ability to centralize its purchases with a single supplier. “Thanks to the proximity of our branch in Farciennes and the strength of Deschacht’s national network, we were able to respond quickly to the site’s additional needs. A solution was found for every request within a very short time,” emphasizes Aurélien Cuvelier. This rapid response—both commercially and logistically—contributed to the project’s smooth progress.

Products that are easy to install

According to Simon Borremans, project manager at Uni-Rail, the materials delivered fully met expectations: high quality, quick availability, and easy installation.

The teams particularly appreciated the lightweight components, which can be moved by hand and are quick to install. This is a significant advantage in an environment where every intervention must meet strict deadlines related to track closures.

A Shared Success

Uni-Rail places particular emphasis on the dedication of its teams. Although they specialize in railroad construction, they have demonstrated remarkable adaptability at this site—where the platforms are being redesigned—in the installation of drainage materials.

Thanks to their motivation and efficiency, the work is proceeding according to schedule. Simon Borremans sums up the project in two words: “complexity and creativity.”.
