Deschacht supplies Hauraton drainage channels for new cyclist tunnel
Level crossings remain unsafe. Therefore, railway manager Infrabel wants to replace as many of them as possible with tunnels. In Lokeren, too, a level crossing on Nieuwe Stationsstraat was closed and replaced by a new bicycle tunnel. The tunnel is an essential part of the F4 bicycle highway, which connects Ghent with Antwerp and also crosses Lokeren along the way.
During the construction of a tunnel, efficient and safe drainage is very important, which is why a drainage channel is provided along the full length of the tunnel next to the cycle path. To best respond to the specific expectations, project manager Ir. Korneel Jansseune from contractor Persyn enlisted Deschacht for advice. The drainage channel had to be strong enough to support cyclists and any maintenance vehicles. It was also desirable for the asphalt paving to be laid directly against the drainage channel.
Due to the limited installation height, the requirement to transport sufficient water to the discharge point, and the load class C250, Hauraton's Faserfix KS was chosen. Peter Rommel, project consultant at Deschacht: “The Faserfix KS drainage channel met all the requirements. In addition, this drainage channel is equipped with the Side Lock locking system, which makes it easy to remove and replace the gratings during maintenance.”
The project was nominated for project of the year at the Gouden Baksteen, the annual awards ceremony of the Bouwunie.
This project also immediately illustrates the diversity of Persyn's specializations: retaining walls, civil engineering, sewerage works, and asphalt. It forms an integral part of the puzzle on the way to a sustainable society, in which bicycle highways promote bicycle traffic and the tunnel offers a considerably safer crossing than at-grade level crossings.
