Hydro-Brake® Optimum flow regulator for Eloy Park in Engis

As part of the redevelopment of the former CEGRAM industrial site in Engis, the Eloy Group is currently developing Eloy Park, a 10-hectare site that will house a new industrial ecosystem starting in 2025. In collaboration with Euroports, multiple logistics halls and storage floors are being built, contributing to the expansion of the Port of Engis, a major port infrastructure hub in Europe.

In this context, Eloy has entrusted Deschacht with a major technical challenge: equipping the site with a flow control system capable of managing an exceptional flow rate of 165 liters per second.

Unique solution for huge flow rate of 165 l/s

The urban planning permit imposed an exceptionally high flow rate. A standard solution was impossible. Not a single competitor was able to offer a sustainable, calculated and validated device capable of regulating such a flow rate. The chosen solution: a Hydro-Brake® Optimum vortex flow control device, fully custom-made in AISI 304 stainless steel by our partner Hydro International. Compared to a traditional regulator, this model stands out for its vortex effect, which makes it possible to achieve an impressive flow rate of 165 l/s with a low head of water. Moreover, this is the first application of this technology in Belgium, a true innovation in the field of hydraulic regulation.

Why the vortex technology?

Unlike classical systems with an opening or a flap, vortex technology uses a natural hydrodynamic principle:

  • the incoming flow generates a vortex that precisely regulates the flow rate,
  • no motorized mechanism necessary,
  • The system remains operational, even during a power outage.

The technical advantages are numerous:

  • Hydraulic stability: management of peak flows and optimal downstream protection.
  • Self-cleaning effect: the vortex limits deposits and greatly reduces the risk of clogging.
  • Reliability: no moving parts, so low wear and maintenance.
  • Optimization: reduction of the required storage volume in the basins.
  • Robustness: stainless steel construction for durability and strength

For this project, the large-format flow regulator was placed in a concrete chamber with an internal diameter of 2 x 2 meters. Hydro International also provided the installation instructions, including for the placement of the device in an ideal position.

A successful joint project

Our project manager Nordine, together with Eloy Travaux and our partner Hydro International, coordinated this project from A to Z. Thanks to this partnership and the integration of vortex technology, the new warehouse in Hermalle-sous-Huy features an innovative, sustainable hydraulic system that is fully tailored to the future needs of Eloy Park.
