Geothermal drilling on valuable heritage in Mechelen

Near the renovated station and the canal, MALT is writing a sustainable new urban story on valuable heritage in Mechelen. An energetic mix of lifelong quality living, working, and relaxing is revitalizing the site of the old ‘Malterie Vandermolen’ malthouse. A major undertaking for which Deschacht supplied the probes, PE pipes, fittings, and manifolds for the horizontal connections of geothermal boreholes.

Vandermolen Maltings

Until 2013, the 11,000 m² site housed a non-ferrous metal pressing plant. Previously, a malthouse and a rubber factory (Le Caoutchouc Récupéré) were also located there. The site was abandoned when the last occupant, Inofer, went bankrupt and has since faced numerous challenges such as vacancy and neglect.

Geothermal drilling

Commissioned by Jan De Nul, contractor Soetaert carried out the geothermal drilling, among other things. A soil mix wall was installed to a depth of 19m, the grout injection anchors were drilled, and the dewatering system was put in place. Contractor Soetaert – under the supervision of Thibaut Vansteelant and Eric Leemans – carried out the geothermal drilling and connections in collaboration with subcontractor Lakwatec. This was no easy task, as the contractor had to deal with artesian water, requiring an additional dewatering system to be installed. Soetaert provided a complete delivery so that the client could immediately start the concrete work after execution.

Deschacht and geothermal energy

The utilities department of Deschacht relies on its expertise in

geothermal drilling

appeal to the leading Swiss manufacturer, HakaGerodur. This international specialist of

geothermal installations

offers an extensive range of products that guarantee quality and reliability. Our comprehensive offer consists of HDPE geothermal probes, HDPE collector wells, filling pipes, pressure pipes, and fittings.

About Lakwatec

Lakwatec bv specializes in connecting geothermal probes for drilling companies. This relieves the burden on drilling companies so they can fully concentrate on the drilling process. In addition, there is no need to keep an inventory of materials, resulting in less stock and more available space. Furthermore, we have another division for well pumps and water treatment.
