Earthworks De Saegher & Son and Deschacht join forces
In Temse, the current residential care center De Reiger is being replaced by a new building. This new property – which will be completely finished in 2025 – already welcomed a first group of residents in November 2023. A green roof is planned above the underground parking, featuring brick paving, green zones, and a fire access road. Earthworks company De Saegher & Zoon from Nieuwkerken-Waas started the excavation work at the beginning of September. Deschacht supplied all necessary sewerage materials.
While the current residential care center – which will eventually be demolished – has 154 rooms, the new building will have 26 fewer. The new premises will therefore be smaller, but at the same time, management is placing a strong emphasis on sustainability and a green living environment. “This is being achieved, among other things, through the creation of an event square totaling 5,000 square meters above the underground parking garage, complete with several attractive green zones,” confirms Willy De Schagt, Road Construction Project Manager at Deschacht. “Commissioned by Strabag, we provided advice in 2021 regarding the sewerage system for this square. The installation of the entire system was entrusted to De Saegher & Zoon from Nieuwkerken-Waas.”
Comprehensive hydraulic study
“In preparing this courtyard garden – including landscaping and the fire access road – it turned out that this project was quite challenging,” says Hans Cannoot of De Saegher & Zoon. “Deschacht’s engineering department performed the necessary calculations for the green roof's drainage. Among other things, it appeared that the drainage for the entire 5,000-square-meter surface had to be routed right through the concrete roof structure via suspended pipes in the underground parking garage. Due to the limited height, this was only possible using pipes with a diameter of 200 millimeters. Based on a hydraulic calculation made by Deschacht's experts, our team was able to properly assess all the preparatory work.”
Ingenious drainage system
“Our hydraulic study showed that the drainage system for this green roof had to be composed of fifteen HDPE drains that would connect to a run of seven collection drains with a diameter of 200, which in turn would pass through the roof structure,” adds Willy De Schagt. “At the top, these seven collection drains were interconnected with pipes with a diameter of 160, which should provide an additional distribution of the discharged rainwater among the drains.".
Roof extension
“In addition to HDPE pipes and inspection chambers, Deschacht also supplied us with 5,000 square meters of Delta-Terraxx dimpled membrane,” confirms Hans Cannoot. “This pressure-resistant dimpled membrane serves as a drainage layer for the roof water and effectively protects the pressure-stable substrate against mechanical loads. Our employees are very satisfied with this dimpled membrane because it is quick and easy to install. The flat overlapping edge with an integrated adhesive strip ensures that the strips connect neatly to one another.” “The Delta Terraxx dimpled membrane is of course only one part of the roof structure,” explains Willy De Schagt. “In addition to this membrane, the roof is also composed of roofing felt, protective film, Argex expanded clay pellets, non-woven geotextile, a sub-base, and block paving. All these elements deliver a robust and durable result.”
