Fish farm Corten in Lommel has been supplying ornamental fish and sport fish to wholesalers and garden centers since 1981. Anyone visiting the company walks among ponds filled with goldfish, koi carp, and fantails. In the autumn of 2021, they faced a major challenge: adapting the water supply for the ponds.
Adjustment of the water supply
Managing Director Kim Corten: “For the water supply to our fish ponds, we draw water from the canal located behind our company. This means that a main water pipe runs from the canal beneath our property, with branches leading to the various ponds. However, due to nearby construction work, we had to remove that main water pipe and relocate our piping system. We had been trying to figure out how to approach this for months. I approached several companies to review the plan. Most politely declined. After all, a fish farm is somewhat different from a construction company. But Deschacht took on the challenge.”
Custom water well
Dieter Smolders from Deschacht's research department started from the plans of Viskwekerij Corten. He designed a new water well for water storage, redrew the water supply system to the basins, and provided advice on the materials for the water pipes. For production and transport, Deschacht worked together with sister company Collinet.
Smooth operations
Kim Corten: “We sat down with Dieter several times to make everything practically feasible and went over the work with him. Because you can’t leave the fish without water. We waited until the off-season in October, and a pump was on standby just in case anything went wrong. To pull off that tour de force, a full week of work had been scheduled. But the job was already done after 5 days. I am extremely satisfied – both with the service of the engineering department and with the custom-made water well for us.”
