Buffer basin – School in Neder-Over-Heembeek

Client: City of Brussels

Main contractor: Denys

The City of Brussels is building a new nursery school for 312 pupils, an elementary school for 576 pupils, and a sports hall in Neder-Over-Heembeek. What is unique about the project is that Brussels is opting for sustainable and ecological building materials as well as passive construction. Contractor Denys is installing the external sewerage system and a buffer basin with a capacity of 140,000 litres. Brussels environmental legislation prescribes that all harvested rainwater must be discharged at a controlled rate. The 140,000-litre buffer basin guarantees that the rainwater from the 5,000 m² area is always discharged at the maximum allowable rate. Moreover, the installation is ultra-fast: 120 m³ of infiltration boxes, connection pieces, and geotextile are installed and welded together in just 5 hours.
