Transforming a pyramidal roof into a green oasis
, specialist in energy-efficient homes, faced a challenge: how to transform an existing pyramid roof with a skylight into a sustainable green roof? Together with Deschacht, they searched for a well-considered and future-oriented solution.
The result
The pyramid roof received a completely new look: from a traditional roof to a sustainable green roof that buffers water, contributes to biodiversity, and makes an ecological statement. The flexible structure offered LAB15 exactly what they were looking for. The result? A satisfied customer and a project that perfectly aligns with their vision of sustainable construction.
The construction of the green roof
Our experts proposed a carefully constructed green roof system, with a focus on protection, water retention, and biodiversity:
- Greenfix Protect 300 protective layer: installed on top of the existing root-resistant roof waterproofing. This layer provides water retention, filtering, and protection for the coating. Made from recycled textile fibers and completely harmless to plants.
- Greenfix substrate panels (25 mm): hydrophilic rock wool that can buffer water while being light and recyclable. The panels are sturdy, non-flammable, and support the overlying vegetation.
- Honeycomb structure (38 mm) with Greenfix extensive substrate: a specially formulated substrate that is lightweight, water-permeable, and nutritious, ideal for healthy and sustainable vegetation.
- Sedum mats: a ready-made vegetation layer with coconut fiber mats and at least 8 different types of sedum. This allowed LAB15 to let the customer immediately enjoy a beautiful green view.
Additionally, gravel traps and a Greenfix inspection chamber were provided to complete the system.
Over LAB15
builds energy-efficient homes in timber frame and mass timber construction. Since its founding, they have already realized more than 200 sustainable homes. Their name refers to the passive house standard (15 kWh/m²y energy consumption), which symbolizes their pursuit of quality and energy efficiency. With an eye for customization and prefabrication in their own workshop, LAB15 delivers homes that are not only sustainable, but also affordable and quickly realizable.
The power of a green roof
Green roofs are essential for sustainable rainwater management. They buffer water, ensure delayed runoff during peak downpours, and create ecological added value by stimulating biodiversity. During construction, the correct buildup is crucial: from root-resistant layers and protective foils to substrate and vegetation. The
Greenfix extensive green roof by Deschacht
is developed for those who choose a light, low-maintenance, and sustainable green roof. Thanks to sedum, mosses, and herbs, a roof is created that not only enhances nature, but also contributes to a healthier living environment. With this project, Deschacht demonstrates how innovative materials and the right expertise go hand in hand with the sustainable ambitions of clients such as LAB15.
