BIM approach for Eastman site expansion

In Ghent, construction company Van Der Kinderen is building the future of Eastman, a specialist in transparent PVB interlayers for safety glass and car windows. With the new production hall, Eastman is creating extra capacity for a brand-new production line. This line focuses on specialty interlayers: high-performance films used, among other things, in the head-up displays of electric vehicles.

Earthworks and sewerage

For the site expansion, Van Der Kinderen relied on Grondwerken De Mol. They were responsible for the earthworks and sewer works, based on a plan by engineering firm Sweco. Because every detail counts in projects of this kind, De Mol enlisted Deschacht's expertise. Deschacht's engineering department optimized the sewer plan and fully elaborated it in 3D using the

complex intersections and existing pipes are already visible in advance. The result: fewer errors on the construction site and smoother execution. In this project, the production process involving plasticizers played a crucial role. Therefore, not only the pipes, but also all fittings had to be made of polyethylene, because this material is more resistant to plasticizers than PVC.

Smart water management

Eastman resolutely chose sustainable and high-quality solutions for water drainage and treatment.

  • In the production hall, process water is collected via stainless steel bell gulleys from Deschacht/Collinet – a deliberate choice for quality in a chemical environment.
  • Around the building, Hauraton Recyfix Hicap drainage channels were chosen, featuring a large buffer volume and high load capacity. Ideal for handling the large flow rates around the hall.
  • The Faserfix Super drainage channels from Hauraton were also installed. This is a solid fiber-reinforced concrete channel, particularly suitable for extreme loads and high dynamic forces under heavy traffic.
  • In addition, oil-water separators ensure that any oil present is efficiently filtered out of the water.

Hauraton as a fixed partner

The collaboration with Hauraton is no coincidence. Eastman has been working for years with the German manufacturer of drainage channels, which is known worldwide for quality and durability. In Belgium

by Hauraton. That partnership guarantees a wide range of solutions, from PP channels to fiber-reinforced concrete and reinforced concrete. Whether it concerns heavy loads, environmentally friendly applications, or an aesthetic finish: Hauraton always offers the right solution.

BIM makes the difference

The 3D model not only provided an overview of all connections, but also a complete bill of quantities and clear production drawings of manholes, among other things. As a result, orders and execution went smoothly, with no surprises on the construction site.
