Case study: Purification of rinse water from the Maredsous microbrewery
In the microbrewery at the Maredsous Abbey, the brewers of Duvel-Moortgat develop and brew beers that can only be tasted and purchased on-site. These seasonal beers or beers for a specific occasion are all brewed in limited volumes, which requires regular cleaning of the equipment. At the request of the Walloon Region, the abbey provides for the purification of the rinse water prior to its discharge. Subcontractor Schockaert, on behalf of Van Roey nv, contacted Deschacht Engineering for the design and calculation of this project. The design had to take into account a buffer solution to prevent contaminated rinse water from entering the sewer system in the event of emergencies. Fast delivery was crucial since the Maredsous Abbey is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Wallonia.

The solution
A grease trap was provided for the pre-treatment of the rinsing water. This separates the fats, oils, and other organic substances from the wastewater before this water is discharged into the sewer system. The wastewater flows through the grease trap, where its flow is slowed down. This gives the grease the opportunity to rise to the surface because it is lighter than water. The separated grease then forms a layer on top of the water, while the cleaner water flows downward. By separating grease and oil before the water is discharged, a grease trap helps prevent blockages and problems in the sewer system. The use of a grease trap thus contributes to efficient wastewater treatment and helps reduce the impact on the environment. Between the existing sewer system and the grease trap, we are providing an additional manhole with a butterfly valve. This valve ensures that the rinsing water can be retained in the event of an emergency. In this case, an additional pump pit is used to pump the contaminated water over to an emergency holding tank.

This gave the contractor and client a clearer picture of the work and its practical execution. Potential issues on the site can thus be detected in advance and adjusted in time.
