XXL Ribwall Pipes Support Expansion in Vilvoorde

At the ENGIE site in Vilvoorde, work is underway on the further expansion of a large-scale facility. This project plays an important role in the energy transition and requires a thorough redevelopment of the existing industrial site.

Commissioned by ENGIE, DEME is acting as the main contractor. For the execution of the earthworks and infrastructure works, DEME is calling upon Aclagro, an experienced player in complex projects.

The challenge: building on and around existing infrastructure

Aclagro was responsible for making the site construction-ready, which included, among other things:

  • The breaking out of old massifs and cellars
  • Site preparation
  • Modifying critical underground infrastructure

An important point of attention was the presence of a existing concrete box culvert which connects the canal to the power plant. This conduit ensures a constant flow rate of cooling water and is essential for the operation of the site.

The challenge: rerouting this connection without compromising capacity or reliability.

Aclagro's approach

Led by project manager Maxim, Aclagro opted for a well-considered approach where execution and material selection went hand in hand.

Aclagro was responsible for:

  • The safe diversion of the existing concrete culvert
  • The integration of a new pipeline connection
  • Execution within an active and technically complex environment

Because of their experience in brownfield projects and working on active sites, Aclagro managed to carry out this critical intervention efficiently and in a controlled manner.

The solution: partnership with Deschacht

For the new connection, a choice was made for XXL Ribwall pipes (Ø1200 mm), supplied by Deschacht.

In close cooperation with Aclagro, the following was examined:

  • The correct sizing
  • The practical workability on the construction site
  • The long-term reliability

This collaboration ensured that the chosen solution was not only technically sound, but also aligned perfectly with the operational reality on the construction site.

The added value of XXL Ribwall pipes in this application:

  • High structural strength
Suitable for heavy loads and industrial applications
  • Optimal flow
Essential for ensuring a constant cooling water flow rate
  • Lightweight and workable
Faster and more efficient installation compared to concrete
  • Flexibility during detours
    Ideal when redesigning existing infrastructure

Strong collaboration as a foundation

The direct collaboration between Aclagro and Deschacht — from the design phase to execution — ensured an efficient approach and a reliable end result.
