Installing a stormwater basin in a single morning? Challenge accepted!

Wanty is currently handling the dismantling and demolition, remediation works, earthworks, roadworks, and sewerage works for an impressive project involving about ten apartment buildings in Nivelles. The company called on Deschacht for the supply of 4 Tubao tanks, which were very easily and quickly assembled into a 650 m³ storm basin designed to collect rainwater from this 3-hectare site.

The project, which has been named Îlot Saint-Roch, is being carried out by project developer Immobel and will consist of some twelve apartment buildings with 3-4 floors and underground parking, spread over a 3-hectare site. It will be carried out in several phases over a (planned) period of 6 years. The Wanty company is responsible for all earthworks, roads and sewerage on the site, as well as for the demolition of an old, vacant factory and the remediation of the site involving various types of purification that need to be carried out.

Tubao, a new addition to a loyal partnership

The collaboration between Wanty and Deschacht is not new. “Deschacht has been one of our loyal partners in the field of PVC, PP, and corrugated pipes for many years,” confirms Benoît Fondu, project manager at Wanty, the last Belgian family-owned company in this sector. “But this was the first time we used Tubao tanks. Initially, everything was planned in reinforced concrete, with a smaller basin, but to speed up construction, we proposed a variant with Deschacht.” This proposal was approved by the city of Nivelles. “We agreed on a delivery date with Deschacht and, in advance and within a week and a half, prepared the site by opening the holes and laying the slabs,” Benoît Fondu continues.

Impressive installation speed

“The advantage of Tubao is the speed of execution, which is quite impressive,” says Dimitri Steilen, project manager at Deschacht, proudly. “For this project, the four tanks were delivered at 8 o’clock in the morning, and by the end of the morning they were all in place.’

The storm basin consists of 4 galvanized steel tanks, each with a length of 21 meters, a diameter of 3 meters, and a weight of 5 tons. These elements were placed at a depth of 9 meters, after which they could be assembled very easily. Thomas Boveroux, site manager at Wanty: “We were able to place them directly into the excavation, which would not have been the case with concrete pipes. For that, we would have needed prefabricated walls.”

Expertise and follow-up

The installation of the tanks was supervised by two managers from the company Tubao, for the handling and placement. These same managers waterproofed the tanks, so that the basin, which now consists of two long 42 m tanks placed side by side, is guaranteed to be watertight.

Wanty is now tackling the other challenges of this site, but also of many other projects, taking into account the need to equip our living environment during this post-flood period with
