Renovation of the bridge over the Semois River in Tintigny: Insulated COOL-FIT pipes ensure the drinking water supply

During the renovation of the bridge over the Semois on the N879 in Tintigny, the parties involved faced a major challenge: ensuring an uninterrupted supply of drinking water to the municipality during the construction work while simultaneously implementing a new, permanent route for the pipeline network. To meet this requirement, Deumer, a member of the Joly Group, turned to Deschacht for the design and delivery of a complete solution featuring nearly 55 meters of pre-insulated COOL-FIT 4.0 pipe from Georg Fischer.

A drinking water pipe was relocated outside the bridge

Unlike a temporary construction detour, the new pipeline on the outside of the bridge was designed as a permanent solution. After the bridge is renovated, the pipeline will remain in use and will henceforth form the new route of the drinking water network at this location.

However, this new configuration presented a major challenge: the drinking water had to be protected from freezing during the winter months.

Choosing the pre-insulated COOL-FIT 4.0 system

After conducting an analysis, Deschacht proposed Georg Fischer’s COOL-FIT 4.0 system. This solution combines an HDPE pressure pipe for drinking water with high-quality PIR insulation and a protective outer jacket made of polyethylene.

Thanks to its pre-insulated design and insulated electrofusion couplings, the system offers excellent thermal protection and significantly simplifies installation on-site. The system is designed for long-term use, provides effective protection against freezing, and meets the requirements of a drinking water infrastructure that must remain operational over the long term.

Custom Walraven brackets and fittings

To ensure a secure attachment to the bridge wall and to absorb the mechanical stresses caused by pipe movement, Walraven mounting brackets were incorporated into the project.

In addition, Deschacht’s specialized teams designed the necessary connections and adapters between the existing cast-iron pipes and the new pipe.

“Deumer presented us with a specific challenge, and we were able to offer a comprehensive solution that was easier to install and technically robust. That is exactly our role: listening to the challenges on the job site, combining the right products, and guiding our customers toward the most efficient solution.”
