High-quality zinc work for residential roofing and cladding

Deschacht bends and delivers NedZink NUANCE Green

In Herent, architect Remy Di Pietrantonio chose NedZink as roofing and facade cladding for his home. For the folding work and the delivery of this material – in the color Nuance Green – Remy called on the Deschacht branch in the same municipality. Dakwerken Baestaens from Ramsel was responsible for installing the zinc. How does Remy experience this collaboration?

As an architect, Remy Di Pietrantonio is well-versed in the strengths of zinc work for the stylish and durable finishing of roofs and facades. “For my clients” projects, I often have pitched roofs finished with folded zinc work,“ Remy says. ”This mainly involves integrated gutters, the roof ridge, and roof overhangs. I typically opt for an anthracite finish. A zinc finish looks natural, contemporary, and sleek, which is not always the case with alternative solutions. Whereas with sheet material cladding you will have many noticeable seams—and possibly also visible fasteners or screws—that is much less the case with zinc. Moreover, when using sheet materials, you still have to finish integrated gutters with a roof edge profile, such as a zinc bead. An integral zinc finish is therefore a logical step in my opinion, with fewer nooks and crannies and less hassle during installation."

Obvious choice

For his own home in Herent, a zinc finish for the roof and facades was therefore an obvious choice. Remy: “For the reveals around the windows, we did consider wood for a while, but in the end we still chose zinc. After all, we weren't confident that the wood would weather nicely in that location. I also have the good fortune of being able to work with a roofer who is very skilled and passionate about installing zinc. This factor also played a role in our final material choice.”

Green shade

Specifically, Remy went for NedZink NUANCE Green, a patinated titanium zinc with a green color nuance. This material is mainly used for high-aesthetic applications, both outdoors (roofs and facades) and indoors (design applications). “With NedZink NUANCE Green, we chose a gray artificial slate in a diamond pattern in green-pigmented zinc,” Remy confirms. “There are only a few brands on the market that offer this green color nuance. At the Deschacht zinc center in Herent – barely five hundred meters from our house – experienced specialists folded and cut our order to fit our wishes and needs. This was certainly an important extra asset!”

Zinc center near shipyard

The proximity of a zinc center was very useful before and during the roof and facade works. “Because we expected a lot of special connection details, we were able to act quickly in consultation with Deschacht and the roofer,” Remy indicates. “Because of the limited surface area, our choice of NedZink NUANCE Green was not obvious. Even so, this material was delivered very smoothly by Deschacht, including ad hoc folding work. To give an example: the entrance porch was clad in standing seam zinc. Because of the many oblique angles, this turned out to be quite a challenge. To be able to work out and measure a good subdivision and profiling, an employee of Deschacht came on-site to brainstorm with the roofer. I greatly appreciate that custom approach!”

Smooth roof and facade works

According to Remy, the collaboration with the team at Dakwerken Baestaens also went very smoothly. “Because the NedZink systems hook into each other—meaning no screws are involved—the roofers were able to work at a brisk pace while still delivering quality work. They are very skilled at working with zinc material. I didn’t hear them swearing at the material too much, which is definitely a good sign. The Anti-Fingerprint property was certainly an important advantage here, as this protective coating prevents distracting fingerprints during installation. The end result is particularly successful!”
