EPDM, or synthetic roofing rubber, provides the perfect solution as roofing material for a flat or slightly sloped roof. In 2023, Deschacht launched a new star product for roofers: STARIX EPDM, a durable solution for both new construction and renovation. What does this application look like in practice?
EPDM, fully known as Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer, is a synthetic rubber widely used in roofing systems and seals for long-term protection against the elements. Due to its outstanding properties—such as waterproofing, UV resistance, and durability—this material is very popular among roofers. Also because of its high and lasting elasticity of up to 400% and a temperature range of -35°C to 120°C.

House renovation project Ghent
One of the roofers who uses STARIX EPDM is Pawel Balcerzak from Vars | Sava in Gentbrugge. He ordered this product from Deschacht for the roof renovation of a house in Ghent. “For this renovation project, we had to relay a total of 93 square meters of flat roof,” he says. “For this, we used unbacked STARIX EPDM with a thickness of 1.5 mm. Because these rolls—which are thirty meters long—can be cut to size, there is little waste and this product therefore yields optimal returns. Moreover, we can attach this EPDM roofing layer very smoothly with the STARIX EPDM contact adhesive. This ensures great ease of installation.”
Finishing with Roval-Classic roof edge profiles
For this renovation project, the roof was finished with Roval-Classic aluminum roof edge profiles. “This high-quality aluminum profile is also suitable for both new construction and renovation,” says Matthias. “In this specific case, the Vars | Sava team used 80 by 60 centimeter profiles. With an ascending support to prevent water ingress and excellent resistance to potential deformation from heat, Royal-Classic also offers the guarantee of a long lifespan.”
