On the Suikerkaai campus of PC Sint-Jan-Baptist in Ghent, a new construction project is rising for the forensic wards Encarga 1, 2, and 3. This realization represents an important step in the renewal of the infrastructure for forensic psychiatry.
The new building will replace the current infrastructure, which currently houses 45 patients. With the design by Archipl Architecten and execution by Bekaert Building Company, the foundation is laid for a modern care environment with space for 45 beds. These are distributed across three specialized residential units, each with its own care mission. In addition to the units, the building also includes administrative and logistic functions, therapy rooms, and technical rooms in the basement.
Sustainable energy via geothermal heat
For the heating of the building, a sustainable solution was chosen: geothermal energy. Specialist Mouton carried out the geothermal drilling for this: 60 boreholes, each 150 meters deep. These boreholes form the basis of the entire heating network. With their expertise in geothermal energy and HVAC, Mouton delivers energy-efficient turnkey projects and makes green energy accessible for large-scale buildings.
Geosondes and collector wells from Deschacht
Deschacht supplied the essential materials for this geothermal project:
- 60 HDPE geothermal probes (diameter 40, PE100 RC, SKZ-approved and pressure tested).
- Two custom-made collector wells, with 28 and 32 connections respectively.
- The horizontal piping for the connection between the probes, the collector wells, and the heat pump.
The custom-produced HDPE collector wells make it possible to bring together multiple geothermal probes and connect them efficiently to the heat pump.
