From Construction Site Challenge to Technical Solution

Large-scale construction projects often present technical challenges that cannot be addressed with a standard solution. This is especially true when existing infrastructure needs to be renovated and every intervention affects the rest of the project.

That was also the case during the renovation of a large water storage basin in Kluizen, where Deschacht’s Industrial Construction division was brought in to participate in the project. The challenge was specific: groundwater was seeping into the reservoir through a leak and had to be drained in a controlled manner without compromising the reservoir’s function as a drinking water source.

First, understand. Then, sketch it out.

The request was forwarded to Deschacht through the temporary joint venture Jan De Nul-Envisan-DEME-Aertssen. Robbe Boone took on the challenge and set out to find a solution that was both technically feasible and practically implementable on the job site.

Instead of immediately opting for a standard product, the situation was first analyzed from a technical perspective. How can groundwater be efficiently collected and pumped? How can we create sufficient infiltration capacity? And how can we ensure that the solution can withstand the conditions on the construction site? Based on that analysis, a custom solution was developed: three large infiltration pits approximately 7 to 7.5 meters high, specifically designed for this application.

Large infiltration surface area, controlled operation

The wells were equipped with large 30-mm openings. This creates a substantial infiltration surface area, which is necessary for the efficient treatment of groundwater.

To prevent rocks and other debris from entering the wells through the openings, the structures around them were fitted with mesh. In addition, a temporary pump was installed in the wells to pump out the collected groundwater.

The result is not a standard setup, but a solution based on the specific circumstances of the project. Engineering and practical experience come together here in a single technical concept. The three infiltration wells were fully prepared for transport and then delivered to the job site.

More Than Just Products: From Engineering to Prefabrication

This project demonstrates what is possible when engineering, water management, and custom prefabrication come together. Deschacht is involved from design through construction and works with the client and contractor to find a technically feasible and efficient solution. For contractors and construction teams, this means having a single point of contact that not only supplies products but also collaborates on systems, construction methods, and technical optimizations.
