Greenfix intensive green roof for maximum greening
With a Greenfix intensive green roof, you create a full-fledged green zone on the roof. You achieve a structure suitable for plantings such as grass, shrubs, and even trees, combined with high water retention and functional use.
This type of green roof requires a heavier structure, but offers maximum possibilities for architecture, biodiversity, and public space.

Technical design and performance
An intensive green roof consists of several high-performance layers:
- thick substrate layer for extensive vegetation
- high-capacity drainage and buffer layer
- integration of irrigation and maintenance
- suitable for foot traffic
- high load and structural requirements
Characteristics of an intensive Greenfix green roof:
- water-retaining volume: variable
- saturated weight: variable
- total construction height: >15 cm
- roof pitch: variable
- accessibility: walkable
- maintenance: intensive
- vegetation selection: grasses, shrubs, plants and trees
Applications and considerations
You use intensive green roofs for roof gardens, public spaces, and architectural applications. They require a correct analysis of load-bearing capacity and a maintenance strategy.
Here too, slope remains important. For a completely flat roof (0%), you use the Greenfix Retain buffer board (20 l/m²), which in walkable applications is filled with 4/20 aggregate for drainage and stability.
Construction of the Greenfix intensive green roof
Greenfix sedum mat
A ready-made vegetation layer with coconut mats planted with at least 8 different species of sedum. The choice to instantly enjoy a green view. Thickness: 30 mm.
Greenfix Drain Eco 20 mm
Perforated dimpled membrane that acts as a drainage layer. Equipped with a filter fleece on the top. Height: 20 mm.
Greenfix Protect
Protective layer made of recycled textile fibers to protect the roofing membrane against mechanical damage. Greenfix Protect also has a leveling function.
Greenfix root barrier film
Optional membrane to be installed if the roof waterproofing is not root-resistant.
Greenfix intensive substrate
Green roof substrate for (semi-)intensive green roof. Mixture based on lava rock composed of organic and mineral components. Thickness depends on vegetation.
- herbs and grasses: 12 to 20 cm
- woody and wild herbs: 15 to 45 cm
- tall herbs and small shrubs: 20 to 60 cm
- large shrubs and small trees: 50 to 150 cm
- medium-high and high trees: >100 cm
FAQ
1. What is the difference with extensive?
An intensive green roof has a thicker structure and more extensive vegetation.
2. What tax should you account for?
Higher than for extensive, depending on substrate and use.
3. Is maintenance necessary?
Yes, intensive green roofs require regular maintenance.
4. Can you walk on the roof?
Yes, intensive systems are suitable for use as a roof garden or public space.
5. When do you use Greenfix Retain?
For flat roofs or when extra buffering and drainage is necessary.
