Building Information Modeling, in the Dutch Building Information Model, is a form of 3D computer design. The difference from classic 2D design programs is that the objects used (e.g., a drainage pipe) in BIM are intelligent. This means they take each other into account, so that conflict situations between different objects are avoided.
Specifically: A situation where a drainpipe—when push comes to shove on the construction site—turns out to have to go right through a concrete support beam is virtually impossible with BIM.
