Deschacht provides crucial link for future electricity grid
The energy transition requires a stronger and future-proof infrastructure. A great example of this is the extensive Elia project between Zottegem and Aalst, where a new underground high-voltage connection is being realized. For the execution of the horizontal directional drilling, contractor BESIX UNITEC is relying on Deschacht's expertise for the supply of no less than 22 kilometers of cable protection conduits.
The project is part of the renewal and reinforcement of the electricity grid between Zottegem and Aalst. The existing overhead high-voltage line is being replaced by a new underground connection that is ready for the future energy needs of the region.
Impressive scale
With a total of 22 kilometers of cable protection conduits, this project ranks among the larger HDD (Horizontal Directional Drilling) applications in Flanders. The drilling operations are carried out by BESIX UNITEC, under the management of project manager Edis Karadan.
Thanks to horizontal directional drilling, long routes can be realized with a minimal impact on the environment, infrastructure, and mobility. This technique offers an efficient solution for the installation of utility lines in locations where traditional open trenches are less suitable.
Quality as a starting point
For this project, BESIX UNITEC deliberately chose PE100 Virgin pipes. These pipes are produced without recyclate, ensuring a consistent and high-quality standard. Their properties are comparable to those of a BENOR-approved pipe, which provides an important guarantee for a project with such a lifespan and strategic importance.
Deschacht was not only responsible for supplying the pipes, but also handled the logistical organization and unloading at the construction site. Smooth availability of the materials was essential to support the tight execution schedule of the drilling operations.
