If you don't have space, you need ideas (and the right materials)

What do you do when you build over the entire surface of a plot and water can only infiltrate the ground via a basin with dispersion drainage beneath the foundation slab? You call upon Deschacht, its engineering department, its Ribwall PP pipes, and custom inspection chambers. That was the smart choice made by contractor Jazy for a project in Evere.

General contractor Jazy, a company that also engages in real estate development, is currently constructing 71 residential units on the corner of Eenboomstraat and Henry Dunantlaan, featuring parking facilities across two basement levels. The project lacks any outdoor space for water drainage. To allow it to infiltrate nonetheless without discharging it into the existing sewage system, a basin with a dispersion drainage system was chosen beneath the foundation slab of level -2.

Plastic instead of concrete

“This was a totally new case for us, because of the nature of the soil,” says Eric Debruyne, who is responsible for purchasing at Jazy. “That is why we carried out soil tests and analyses to find out if there would be sufficient infiltration. Ultimately, we chose a basin, while retaining the draining sand layer.”.

“First we thought of concrete inspection chambers and pipes,” Eric Debruyne continues. “But we received an interesting proposal from Deschacht, one of our regular partners, to use polypropylene infiltration pipes instead, and polyethylene inspection chambers suitable for drainage pipes.”

Special tubes

“In close collaboration with the contractor, our engineering department drew up the layout and installation plans for the basin elements,” says Dimitri Steilen, project manager at Deschacht. “The inspection chambers were custom-made by Collinet. The 50 meters of pipes are made of perforated PP Ribwall with a diameter of 1000 mm. A geotextile jacket protects the basin, which is also lined with Argex, against the intrusion of surrounding soil. The PP Ribwall pipes are characterized by their double wall: an outer wall with ribs that provide an even larger infiltration surface and a smooth inner wall with the desired perforations. A product and a system with nothing but advantages: exceptionally short manufacturing times, a lighter weight for handling, and, on-site, faster execution of the work. Those are features that every contractor is happy with …”
