In a few weeks, Sitel will have a brand-new PMD sorting center in Hermalle-sous-Huy. This colossal project will be able to process 40,000 tons of waste per year. Earthmoving company Loiseau carried out the earthworks, drainage, and site preparation. And guess where the custom tanks and sewerage network come from?
The conversion of a vacant lot into a state-of-the-art PMD sorting center
The new 15,300 m² sorting center will be built on a vacant 36,000 m² site. “All levels of the site had to be completely adjusted to create a flat platform. We are building the foundations and the sewage system of the building, in other words, foundations ready to be concreted. As soon as the buildings are constructed, we will finish the surrounding area: roads, parking lots, etc.,” says Damien Navarra, site manager at Loiseau.
A custom-made HDPE tank that protects the soil from contamination
A waste facility of this size generates a significant amount of leachate. These “waste juices” contain many pollutants and must be recovered and stored safely. This is where Deschacht’s expertise comes into play. Safety requirements have led to the construction of a double-walled horizontal antenna tank. Vincent Brehl accompanied the site as a representative of Deschacht: “a double-walled high-density polyethylene tank is the safest and most unalterable solution for recovering and storing these maceration juices from the product.” The 24,000 L tank is quite classic in its dimensions (2 meters in diameter and 10 meters long), but features a customized manhole. This 800 mm access is, as Damien Navarra explains, a requirement of the specifications: “Access to the tank is via a ladder and in this case we usually provide a minimum opening of 700 mm. But we expanded it even further, at Sitel’s request.» This tank has many advantages, as Vincent Brehl explains: “its lightness (only 1850 kg), its resistance to all corrosive products, and the joints made during production in our workshops. This is the guarantee of a completely watertight system.”
Deschacht presents “from the first shovel to the last flower pot”
Vincent Brehl uses this expression to remind that Deschacht supplies much more equipment than just the tank mentioned: “the estimate was originally focused on the large elements and the general schemes, but many additional devices were subsequently ordered from us.” One of the other highlights of this project is a 100 m³ Tubao tank. This galvanized steel fire storage tank is 3 meters in diameter and 15 meters long. It is customized with a foot valve, aluminum ladder, and galvanized steel riser to improve corrosion resistance. Deschacht also supplied the vast majority of the sewer facilities: flexible PE ducts, one hundred meters of polypropylene pipes with diameters of 630 mm and 500 mm, as well as concrete risers and drains. Damien Navarra confirms that thanks to Deschacht he missed nothing: “Deschacht is really very complete in terms of equipment and services. They are also very focused on customization. Whether it is concrete, PE, or inspection chambers, everything can be adapted by the design office.”
