In February, the redesign of the Moorkensplein in Borgerhout started. The square is largely being transformed into a green pedestrian oasis with many trees.
The specifications prescribed root-guiding panels and pressure-distributing sandwich panels. The plastic sandwich panels bear and distribute the pressure that would otherwise be absorbed by the foundation. The open structure of the panels ensures sufficient water permeability and aeration. In this way, the trees cannot cause damage to the paving above, and the nutrient-rich subsoil remains suitable for optimal root growth.
In addition to the sandwich panels, plastic inspection chambers with non-return valves are also being installed in various locations. The trees are equipped with a drainage system. The valves prevent water from flowing back into the sewerage system during dry periods, and the valves can also be closed in winter to prevent water containing de-icing salts from entering the system.
