Stylish drainage for fountains in Sint-Truiden squares
Trudoplein and Groenmarkt in Sint-Truiden are getting a makeover. Eye-catchers in the two squares are the fountains. Playful water features with light shows in various colors, and spray nozzles that in different directions and on spraying the rhythm of music. Willemen Infra – Kumpen managed everything smoothly and installed drainage systems around the fountains from Hauraton.

Natural stone meets design
Tom Scheirlinck, project planner at Willemen Infra – Kumpen: “There are two types of natural stone on the squares: bluestone and sawn granite. The water features are a few centimeters lower than the squares and are made entirely of granite. For aesthetic reasons, the engineering firm chose to drain the water from the smaller fountain on Trudoplein using the fine RECYFIX®HICAP drainage channel. For the large fountain on Groenmarkt, the firm also opted for design with the METROPOLIS grating.”
Fine drainage channel
Peter Rommel, project advisor at Collinet: “The slot of the RECYFIX®HICAP drainage channel is only 14 mm wide. For example, women with fine stiletto heels must also be able to walk across the square without getting stuck.” Pierre van Stratum, project manager at Willemen Infra – Kumpen: “Those narrow channels are barely noticeable. They are so subtle that you can hardly see them between the natural stone.”
Fiber-reinforced concrete
Peter Rommel: “FASERFIX®KS slot drains collect the water from the fountain on the Groenmarkt. They are made of fiber-reinforced concrete. You can lay the paving right up against them. That gives a nice end result.”
Pierre van Stratum: “Thanks to the flat concrete, you can install them easily. It took us no effort to lay them in 4 straight lines. They look solid. We were indeed able to neatly lay the square's granite tiles right up against them.”
Custom-cut designer grilles
Peter Rommel: “The gutters on the Groenmarkt are finished with a METROPOLIS grate. Because the grates had to have a trapezoidal shape, we had them precision-mitered at the factory. This makes them properly watertight and ensures little water from the fountain is lost. Because they are made of cast iron, they are protected with a rust-resistant KTL coating.”
Pierre van Stratum: “The METROPOLIS gratings were also installed quickly. Thanks to the screwless SIDELOCK fastening system, you can easily hook them together. This keeps them much more secure and provides a much sturdier system. By the way, this is the first time I’ve worked with drainage channels and gratings from Hauraton. They are solid, sturdy systems.”
METROPOLIS is a design grating based on the decorative, asymmetric lines and flowing shapes of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. This gives you a solution for projects where the client also considers the aesthetic aspect important. The grating is resistant to heavy loads and features an integrated handle to connect the gratings to each other.
SIDE-LOCK is a unique locking system that works without any additional parts. You simply place the grating on the drainage channel and click it into place with your foot. Want to clean the drainage channels? Then you can remove the grating in a flash using a simple screwdriver. Compared to a system with bolts, you can attach and remove the gratings almost twice as fast.
