8 km of extra strong Ribwall sewerage beneath the tracks between Aalter and Landegem
Infrabel is working on the construction of a third and fourth railway line between Ghent and Bruges. To enable the construction of these two extra tracks, contractor Hens is expanding the existing railbed between Aalter and Landegem. This also includes the installation of 8 km of Ribwall infiltration pipes beneath the tracks. At Infrabel's request, Deschacht is having them manufactured in strength class SN16.
Stiffness class SN16
Site manager Luc Verstricht: “From Ghent to Bruges, Infrabel is also installing new drainage between the 2 new tracks. They are specifically using PP-Ribwall to allow rainwater between the tracks to infiltrate into the ground and to discharge excess water to the sewer system. TUC RAIL, Infrabel's engineering consultancy, specifically requires stiffness class SN16 because the pipes have to withstand a lot of pressure from trains. Pipes with that load-bearing capacity are almost never used, and certainly not in road construction.
PP-Ribwall itself is also stronger than regular PVC.”
Special production and delivery
“SN16 pipes are definitely not standard. Deschacht had to have them delivered from Poland. Partly due to the coronavirus, there were some issues with that delivery. But Deschacht played it smart and arranged everything down to the last detail. They tracked the truck with the first delivery until it was at our construction site. That is what we are used to from them. It is not for nothing that we have been working with them for several years. They always deliver your materials on the day you ask. And if something does go wrong, they go above and beyond to get everything sorted out.”
