For the new wing of AZ Groeninge, geothermal energy was decisively chosen as a sustainable and efficient heating solution. Under the new parking lot, the contractor realized a BEO field with 65 double loops of 114 meters, on top of the existing field with 237 boreholes of 60 meters. Thus, geothermal energy will supply 27% of the site's total heat requirement – an important step in the hospital's energy master plan to reduce gas consumption by 40% compared to 2021 by 2030.
Deep drilling requires specific solutions
The new BEO field lies significantly deeper than the existing one and exceeds the depth criterion for the Kortrijk region. This required an exceptional permit. Additional safety measures prevent contamination between the various soil layers, including the use of special magnetic grout as a tracer to ensure the correct filling of each borehole.
Deschacht delivers expertise and custom materials
For this complex project, Deschacht supplied all the necessary materials: 2,100 meters of HDPE 40 pipes, horizontally and sloping towards the collector wells, three type C2 collector wells with 22–25 connections, and HDPE main pipes DN125, DN160, and DN200 for the connection to the building. In addition to the supply, we provided clear installation instructions and technical advice from our specialists. Thanks to our expertise and phased delivery, design, materials, and execution could be optimally coordinated. In this way, we contribute to a smooth process and a future-proof result, ensuring that geothermal energy yields maximum returns today and tomorrow.
