Case study: Close collaboration between research department and subcontractor for sewerage of new VTI building in Bruges
A brand-new school campus is rising on the Vaartdijkstraat in Bruges. The Eiffage Group (JV Vuylsteke – Antwerpse Bouwwerken) is building the new VTI campus there. It goes without saying that this includes a sewer system that meets legal, architectural, and budgetary requirements. We spoke with subcontractor Maeyaert, who carried out the sewerage works, and Dirk Stuyven of Deschacht, which supplied the materials for it.

Collaboration between study service and sewer contractor
Dirk Stuyven, Head of Study Department & Engineering at Deschacht: “We secured the project for both the internal and external sewerage of the new technical school campus after intensive consultations between our study department, the contractors, the school board, and the engineering firm. Scholen Van Morgen (the public-private partnership between the Flemish government and private companies) also had a say in the matter. In cooperation with our customer, Maeyaert from Roeselare, we technically and budgetarily optimized the sewerage concept and proposed the appropriate facilities for wastewater drainage as well as rainwater buffering and infiltration. All of this was developed into a complete drainage plan in compliance with all legal standards and regulations.”
Complete implementation plan for sewerage
“This is a substantial project,” says Pieter-Jan Maeyaert, CEO of Maeyaert Aannemingen. “VTI is a technical school, so in addition to the necessary piping for sanitary and shower drainage, we also had to provide facilities for wastewater disposal from certain departments such as the automotive, welding, and machining workshops. In consultation with Deschacht's engineering department, we developed a complete plan for the interior and exterior sewerage. This was then discussed and refined during site meetings with the main contractor, architect, and the client's engineering bureau. That took several months.”


Mega Ribwall infiltration pipes and inspection chambers
PVC pipe was used for the internal sewerage, while 545m of Ribwall IT infiltration pipe ø1000 was used for the drainage and buffering of rainwater. The matching HDPE inspection chamber has a diameter of a staggering 1.6 meters! The DWA MDPE chambers, in turn, were right up the alley of Collinet's specialists. “Those inspection chambers are custom-made at Collinet and equipped with all accessories,” says Pieter-Jan Maeyaert, “that certainly saves a lot of time on the job site.”
